Why Won't My Car Start?
There are few things as gut wrenching when it comes to car trouble as a vehicle that just won't start. If there is any good news in this scenario it is that many car problems that result in no starts can be easily resolved. Depending on the symptoms you experience when you turn the key you can often tell what the trouble is. Here are five of the most common causes of no starts in cars.
The most common reason a vehicle will not start is if the battery is dead. Batteries do need to be replaced every 2-5 years depending on the type, but it is more common for a battery to die due to leaving the lights on. In this case a jump start will get you going and the alternator will recharge the battery.
As mentioned, it is the alternator that recharges the battery. If the alternator fails the battery will be drained of its juice. This is because the alternator also uses the electricity it produces from the motion of the motor to power other electrical items, such as lights, the radio and power accessories. A common sign of a failing alternator is dim or flickering headlights.
The starter motor is fed an electrical current when the key is turned that causes it to actuate its pinion gear to spin the motor. If the starter fails you'll often hear a loud clicking noise when you turn the key, which is the sound of the motor actuating but not spinning.
If gas can't get to the combustion chamber, you're not going anywhere. First off, is there gas in the tank? Yes? Good. Other issues that can prevent fuel flow is a broken fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or malfunctioning fuel injection units.
The ignition switch is what gets the whole starting system up and running. The ignition coil is what produces the spark that ignites the air and fuel mix. A common sign of of ignition switch trouble is the engine stalling.
